Run Your Hand Over the Hood. That Texture Is the Problem.
Wash your car, dry it, then put your hand inside a plastic sandwich bag and glide it lightly across the hood. If it drags like fine sandpaper instead of gliding like glass, you have bonded contamination. That is not dirt sitting on top waiting for better soap. It is iron from brake dust and rail dust that landed hot, embedded into the clear coat, and started corroding in place, plus industrial fallout and road tar sitting alongside it.
It comes out in two stages and both are required. A chemical iron remover goes on first and dissolves the metallic particles, which is why the car appears to bleed purple down the panels while it works. Then a clay bar shears off everything non metallic that is still standing above the surface. What you are left with is a clear coat that is genuinely smooth, which is the only condition in which polishing or coating actually works.
This is the step that separates a detail that looks right in six months from one that hazes over in four weeks. It is also the step almost every quick service skips, because it adds an hour and the customer cannot see it happening.
