What California Actually Allows, Window By Window

This is the part shops tend to be vague about, so here it is straight. Under California Vehicle Code section 26708, your front side windows have to transmit more than 70 percent of light with film and glass measured together, so there is no legal dark tint up front unless you hold a medical exemption. The windshield takes film only across the top 4 inches, down to the AS-1 line the manufacturer marked in the glass. Rear side windows and the back glass have no darkness limit at all. Red, amber, and blue film are out, and mirrored film that is more reflective than standard glass is out. We tint to that standard by default and tell you when a request would put you outside it.

Tint Is Interior Protection Before It Is Anything Else

Around 99 percent of UV stopped at the glass is 99 percent that never reaches your dashboard, your leather, or your door cards. That matters more here than almost anywhere, because a car parked outside in Orange County gets that exposure most days of the year. If you have already paid to have the cabin restored, film is what keeps you from paying for it twice. Do the Windshield While You Are At It

Your windshield takes more abuse than any other glass on the car and it is the one panel tint cannot legally protect. What it can take is a coating. A windshield ceramic coating runs $100 and makes rain sheet off above about 45 miles an hour, which means the wipers stay off in light rain and bug residue rinses instead of baking on. It uses the same chemistry as the CQ.UK 3.0 paint coating work we do, applied to glass instead of clear coat. Cheap on its own and worth adding to any tint appointment.

Film On the Glass, Film On the Paint

Tint and paint protection film are the same trade skill applied to two different surfaces. Both are urethane or ceramic layers cut to the panel, both live or die on how clean the surface was underneath, and both fail at the edges first when someone rushes the prep. If freeway rock chips on the hood and bumper are what actually bother you, paint protection film is the product that solves it. People commuting the 5 or the 405 daily usually end up doing both.
